What is Bokeh?

Creating a Bokeh effect is actually pretty simple but looks like a complex task. Here is a quick guide that will help you to capture amazing Bokeh backgrounds.

Steps to take Bokeh backgrounds:

Step 1:

Find a light source.

Actually, the Blurred background isn’t the true definition of Bokeh. In short, it means blurred lights. So to take perfect Bokeh you need to find a light source.

For Bokeh backgrounds effects you can use evening sun filtering through trees or a cityscape at night. If you need some great Bokeh crinkle up some tinfoil and put the light source in front of it.

The Bokeh effect looks great if light sources to create Bokeh are small and have few of them. I mean a single source of light doesn’t look great. You can use small patches of sunlight coming through leaves of the tree to take Bokeh effect. But keep in mind direct sunlight ray won’t create a Bokeh. The color of the light source will show up in your photos.

Step 2:

Position your subject far away from the light source.

If you keep subject directly in front of the background or lean up against it then you won’t get the blurrier background. To make blurrier background you need to place subject far away from the background. Keep these things in mind that to create a Bokeh effect, the background needs to be blurred. So make sure to place your subject at few distances ahead of the light source. Take a subject further away if your camera doesn’t have a manual mode.

In a Bokeh, effect distance will affect how big those light orbs appear. If you need larger orbs of light, place a subject a little bit closer to the light source. Keep more distance between a subject and background for smaller light orbs.

Step 3:

Adjust your aperture, then take the shot.

Obviously, the distance will help you to blur out the background, but also aperture will help to make background blurrier. Small focal length or wide aperture Will blur out background even more. For a great Bokeh effect, a wide f/1.8 will really help you. You can set your camera to Aperture priority mode and select low focal number, then you are ready to take perfect Bokeh shots.

Bonus Tip: If you don’t have Aperture Priority Mode on your camera settings, then try a different app that allows you full manual control. Such as camera fv-5 lite from play store. then use both aperture and distance to control the bokeh in the background.

If you need more of the subject in focus and don’t want to use super wide aperture or don’t have a lens capable of super wide aperture. Then simply add more distance between the subject and light source. Keep experimenting with different distances. You should be able to capture great Bokeh effect by using both distance and aperture to blur the background.
